Working with ink has given me such an appreciation for positive and negative space. Positive space refers to the subject or areas of interest in an artwork, such as a person's face or figure in a portrait, the objects in a still life painting, or the trees in a landscape painting. Negative space is the background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work. Learning how to allow these principals to create balance and rhythm in my work is something I continue to embrace and learn.
It was intimidating working with ink at first. Knowing that once the medium met the page, there was no going back, all lines are permanent. Understanding that all art doesn't need to 'look good' and allowing myself to make 'bad art' furthered my exploration with inks. Being comfortable making mistakes and having to add more to a drawing to rediscover the balance of positive and negative space has been insightful! Participating in the October trend of '#inktober' on social media the past few years has provided leaps in my growth with this medium. The affordability, ease of accessibility and limited area a few pens take up has turned ink drawings into one of my most practiced areas.
