The intricacy of printmaking, makes it such a beautiful art form. The ability to intricately and carefully carve something out once and be able to create any multitude of stamp printed creations from that piece is astonishing to me. The detail and accuracy to have with the carving tool, knowing that one mistake can throw off the balance being achieved in the piece is vital.
Through my exploration with stamp carving, I've made countless mistakes on lino blocks. Each time reminding myself to go slow and verify that what I'm carving is meant to be the negative space. It's such a different headspace that typical creation, where what you're manipulating on the page or medium becomes the positive space of the artwork.
Currently, my fixation with stamp carving is styled similar to traditional tattoos. Embracing the bold lines and smooth curves of the designs, creating memorable pieces that can be printed together onto an art piece or hold their own beauty separately.
I've always had a fascination for googie style signage and architecture. Bringing that together with my love for Cincinnati and the iconic moments of the city, I've combined the two into one of my newest block carvings, 'Iconic Cincy Signage'.
Featuring some of the most loveable and notable moments through Cincinnati, sports teams, the most beloved restaurant of the city and local places that always draw a crowd, this 9x12" piece will start a conversation and bring nostalgia to any room it's in. Each being individually rolled, inked, pressed, signed and sealed - making sure that no two are perfectly identical in the relief that the ink leaves.
